Photography by Ken Woroner

One’s sense of place is strongly influenced by emotional and psychological markers. Here, personal narrative merges with family connections, historical context, and migrations of all kinds. Recurring figures appear at various ages—lasting relationships coexist with the fleeting moments that photography captures so effectively. Central to the installation are numerous large-scale depictions of the local landscape. Recent images share space with selections from a 45 year archive.

Much like the way fragmented images surface in our dreams and memories—appearing as disjointed flashes or heightened tableaus—this exhibition brings together a complex mélange of photographs that ultimately coalesce into a cohesive, organic whole. At the heart of the project is the idea that everything is connected—people, places, histories, and experiences—all intertwined across time and place.

The dérive (“drift”) is an unplanned journey through a landscape. Related to the dérive, psychogeography considers how geographical environments affect people’s emotions and behaviour. These concepts inform this project, by exploring how social interaction and physical surroundings combine to shape identity.
